"I work as a research technician at KU, and have had more than one occasion to realize how unsupportive and suspicious the KS legislature is of higher education. This said, the recent informational request on the part of the legislature cannot be interpreted as a faculty distraction. This is an inquery into how to repress a minority group. This is an attack on a certain 'type' of person on the campuses of Kansas' universties. It is essential to recognize and decry the principle behind this informational request, because the request when sufficiently rebuffed is only insulting. But if actions such as this are successful, they could be the first in a ground-swell of anti-gay initiatives intended to squelch our rights as citizens. We must remember that these kinds of actions are not only threats to academic freedom, but potential threats to our very safety."
