Rush Limbaugh's 35 Truths, part one

1. The greatest threat to humanity lies in the nuclear arsenal of the Soviet U.

Well, when you wrote this, the Soviet Union had not yet shown itself to be the paper tiger that it was, however, glasnost was in full swing, and it was clear that the Cold War was ending. Also, why were the Soviet's weapons more of a threat than our own? Both sides could (and still can) easily destroy humanity many times over.

2. The single greatest threat to the free people of the world is posed by the Soviet U.

I suppose you could say that at that time; however, I would say the greatest threat both back then and now, and in the future will always be from the forces of totalitarianism...which wore a hammer and sickle, but have also worn a swasitka, or seven red stars.

3. Peace does not mean the removal of nuclear weapons.

Peace is the existance of goodwill between peoples and nationas.

4. Peace does not mean the absence of war.

Very true. For example, Israel and Syria are not in a state of war (well, technically they are, but you know what I mean), but they are certainly not at peace.

5. War is not obsolete.

Neither is peace.

6. Ours is a world governed by the aggressive use of force.

Perhaps, but you could easily argue both ways. Generally, western nations do not use force to get their way, at least if you define force as military might. Rather, nations use combinations of economic and political persuasion to get their way. See the recent Japan-US near trade war as an example. Other than a few rogue states like Iraq and Serbia, blatant military force is not used anymore.

7. There is only one way to eliminate nuclear weapons...use them.

Let's get France first! (sorry, I couldn't resist!) But seriously, there is no reason one cannot get rid of most nuclear weapons by simply dismantling them.

8. Peace cannot be achieved by developing an understanding of or with the Russians.

No doubt about that one...you simply blew it. Before the entire USSR collapsed, we were well on the way of achieving an "understanding" with them. Or, to be more precise, they began to understand that our way was best, and were beginning to more their economy towards capitalism and their politics towards freedom. Western values won!

9. Americans opposing America is not always courageous. Sometimes it is dangerous.

Let's get this stright. It is dangerous if their opposition leads them to spy on us, turn traitor, or such. It is not, nor will it ever be dangerous if those opposed to American actions protest and petition for redress of grievances. No matter how offensive you may find it, war protester and the like are exercising the very rights that our nation defends.

10. Communism kills.

So does capitalism.

11. Neither the United States, nor anyone else imposes freedom on the people of other countries.

Absolutely correct. You can guide a horse to water, but you can't make him drink is how the old saying goes.

12. Freedom is God-given. It is the natural state to which humans yearn.

I believe this is generally correct.

13. To the Soviet Union, peace means the absence of opposition.

Judging by their rhetoric today, it seems that many conservatives feel the same way.

14. To free people, peace means the absence of threat and the presence of justice.

I'd add one more, economic security for themselves and their children.

15. The peace movement in the United States, whether by accident or by design, aids the Soviet Union.

Well, I guess they didn't do too well a job lately.

16. The collective knowledge and wisdom of senior citizens is the most valuable asset in society.

Doubtful. Knowledge is; senior citizens are like any other group. Some smart, some stupid, some in-between.

17. The greatest football team in the history of civilization: the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970's

Well, I suggest you keep yor day job, since just about every football fan and commentator agrees that the 49ers of the 1980's were the greatest dynasty in NFL history!

18. There is no such thing as war atrocities. War IS an atrocity.

Correct. But in war, like anywhere else, there are rules. 19. Regardless of the pain, nostalgia only takes us to those pleasant memories.

A lesson to all those conservatives who would "make America be like it was back in the old days".

20. There IS a god.

And she probably is pretty pissed at what we have been doing down here.

21. Abortion is wrong.

So don't have one.

22. Morality is not defined by individual choice.

Well, it is not defined by the Christian Bible either, unless you happen to be a Christian who believes in the Bible.

23. Evolution cannot explain creation.

But creation can explain evolution. Think about that.

24. Feminism was established so that unattractive women could have access to the power of society.

All the attractive ones were, and always will be happy doing the laundry, cooking, and saying "yes, honey.."

25. Love is the only emotion that cannot be controlled.

Except for hate.

26. The only difference between Mikhail Gorbachev and previous Soviet leaders is that Gorbechev knows how to appeal to the Western media.

Another difference is that Gorbechev was the only Soviet leader to dissolve the Soviet Union.

27. Soviet leaders are actually left wing dictators.

A dictator is a dictator, whatever his stripe.

28. Despite what they are teaching at the University of Missouri, Abraham Lincoln was our greatest President.

What!??! Not Reagan?!?!?

29. The wherever-they-happen-to-be Raiders will never be the team they were in Oakland.

Hey, his Rushness has the gift of second sight! Al Davis must have read this, because the Raiders are moving back to Oakland.

30. The United States will again go to war.

How true. I will make another bold prediction: the sun will again rise in the East.

31. To more and more people, a victorious United States is a sinful United States.

Sez who? Did you see the parades after the Gulf War? 99% of Americans are proud and patriotic citizens who love their country and want it to do the best that it can.

32. This is frightening and ominous.

Don't worry, Rush. America is a strong country, and the liberals will get her back on course.

33. There will always be poor people.

Yeah, but the number of them can be minimized.

34. This is not the fault of Malcolm Forbes, Ronald Reagan, or Rush Limbaugh.

Well, a lot of it is Reagan's fault.

35. You should thank God for making you an American.

And I thank God I can think for myself rather than having you think for me.
