Liberal Place: Savannah, GAThese are comments on Savannah, submitted by other Turn Left visitors. They do not necessarily represent the opinion of the webmaster. You may add a comment on Savannah if you want. There is a fine line between apathy and tolerance, and in Savannah it vanished
long ago!
Savannah has always had a libertine attitude, which contrasts with the puritanism of some of the more inland regions of Georgia, and Savannah people have traditionally flaunted this contrast past the point of recklessness. Two things which are not tolerated in Savannah are proselytizing and letting your judgments get in the way! 'Most anything else is fine. The basic libertine tradition of Savannah has been augmented by several things in addition to a reaction to puritanism. It's a major seaport. It's located on I-95 and the Intracoastal Waterway, both major north-south traffic arteries. It is surrounded by military bases. It's a major tourist attraction. Consequently it has always been constantly exposed to new ideas, new people, new accents, etc. Furthermore, it's a melting pot; there's quite an ethnic mix. The surrounding beaches are terrific. If you can gain access to a boat, there are many islands around where the beaches are unspoiled and often uninhabited. Savannah is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The downtown area is fun, especially if you like nightlife. There are quite a few important artists and writers in town. St. Patrick's Day is one huge outdoor drunk! In early April, when the flowers bloom, the place is breathtaking! I've never seen anything so gorgeous!
One of the best things is the I-don't-give-a-damn attitude. Savannah is
definitely not P.C., but it definitely is tolerant (or apathetic)!
