Liberal Place: Sarasota, FL

"Formerly liberal-unfriendly. Getting more and more progressive everyday. One of the most Republican, affluent places in Florida, the city has grown culturally, artisticly and politically. Home to well-to-do retirees, there is also a population of artists, writers, musicians, students, barflies and all sorts. Gays and lesbians quietly gaining acceptance. New movie theatres, dance clubs, and eco-tourism are recent developments. Mote Marine Lab continues enviromental research. Ringling Museum and other cultural attractions are popular. Very PRO ARTS and PRO PBS. New College (small college) is granola city. Elected officials almost all Republican - but a Democrat occasionally slips through. Republicans tend to be the pro-choice, chamber of commerce type. The Christian Coalition Republicans don't do well here and don't feel at home. There was an elected black mayor, who lost a contest for county commission. Community tends to bow down to development interests, but environmentalism, vegetarianism, alternative medicines and even alternative churches (Center for Positive Living is positively left of center) are a growth industry. And the sunsets are pretty to boot.

...and another comment...

Politically, democrats do not exist in Sarasota or Sarasota County. The party is becoming increasingly weaker throughout the State of Florida and Sarasota Couhty is in the vanguard. If you're a Democrat with political asperations, go to West Palm Beach and snuggle up to Robert Wexler. You won't get elected dog-catcher in Sarasota!
