Liberal Place: Portsmouth, NH

Although most of New Hampshire is populated with closed minded conservatives, Portsmouth, located on the seacoast, is a great place to live if you're of the liberal persuasion. Portsmouth has a large population of musicians, artists, craftsmen, tolerant liberals, and homosexuals. One of the really wonderful places is the Unitarian Universalist Church. The church attracts a wonderful cross-section of the surrounding communities, who come together to celebrate our common joys, and build strength to reach our common goals. Everyone with a social concern has a chance to be heard, and the friends and members of the church take action to insure justice is done.

The seacoast community has a deep respect for the arts, and it shows ... there is a huge venue of live music, a number of theatres that host local, national and international performances - as well as art films, there are numerous art galleries, oh, I could go on and on! I suggest you come and see for yourself.

Not only do we currently have a great Democratic Governor, Jeanne Shaheen, but Portsmouth itself has never in the past 20 years elected a Republican Mayor or City Official.  During our "Market Sqaure Days," they set up two booths - one has Pro-Choice stickers and the other Pro-Life.  I can tell you the vast majority of the population proudly supports women's rights by wearing a Pro-Choice sticker!

This "liberal-friendly" city a few years ago decided to vote away the civil rights of its gay and lesbian citizens. That doesn't sound too liberal-friendly to me, even if we are pro-choice!

While Portsmouth is a great place in many regards, it does suffer from a condescending air. Many residents seem to think themselves intellectually and morally superior to their neighbors in Seabrook, Hampton, Dover, and Somersworth. It often embodies many of the least desirable traits of liberalism, such as elitism and a disdain for the faith of all non-Unitarians. Oh, btw, Portsmouth has indeed elected Republicans, such as city councilor Evelyn Marconi and Executive Councilor Ruth Griffin.

I just want to comment on the "great Democratic Governor Jeanne Shaheen." She's a closet Republican, plain and simple. Supports the furthering and USE of capital punishment; Opposes any broad-based tax to pay for education. Gov. Paul Celucci (Republican) of Massachusetts is twice as liberal as Shaheen.

I live in New Hampshire about an hour from Portsmouth. I have gome there on several occasions with friends to see plays or just to hang out. Portsmouth has a great microbrewery! Not to many years ago the city was a dump, but, over the last two decades, great effort has been put into gentrifying it. I think Portsmouth has a 'liberal feel' that cannot be had anywhere else in the state.
