Liberal Place: Portland, OR

It's like San Francisco and Seattle, only on a smaller scale, and not as hilly....Just as committed to conserving the environment as Seattle. Curbside recycling has been around for a while. Remember...Oregon is home to the original Bottle Bill...Home to two of the most liberal of liberal arts colleges--Reed and Lewis & Clark....When Oregon had its vote on anti-gay legislation, the Portland area rose in opposition against it, and outweighed the predominantly conservative rural areas of Oregon that voted in favor of it. In 1992, measure 9 was defeated 55%-45%, with much of the 55% from the Portland metro area.

Portland is a city that supports the arts, with wonderful theatrical performances, and an acclaimed ballet. Also the yearly "Artquake" festival along with the weekly Saturday Market give local artists a chance to display and share their work.

Portland has the only directly-elected regional government in the nation, which is simply called Metro. The agency is run by Executive Officer Mike Burton, a democrat who was twice-elected by voters of the region. A seven member council serves as the legislative arm of Metro. The government serves the 24 cities that make up the Portland metro area, and has enacted a way-progressive region-wide program addressing urban sprawl, affordable housing, stream protection, air quality, recycling, transportation alternatives and greenspace protection. Metro also owns and operates several regional parks, the Oregon Zoo, Oregon Convention center and a host of other regional facilities. A sure sign that Metro works for everyday people? Right-wing interests across the country are financing a campaign to abolish the agency!
