Liberal Place: Olympia, WA

The capitol of Washington State is well known to many West Coast activists. Located near several State and National Forests, environmental consciousness is a way of life here. Olympia is also the home of the experimental liberal-arts school "The Evergreen State College" and supports an active art community most noted for independent music and film. A well-organized gay community has done well at promoting a high level of tolerance that is unknown in many other regions of the nation. Olympia is only a short drive away from Seattle and Portland, OR. but the small town atmosphere here is certainly more relaxed.

...and another comment...

I enjoyed reading your list of liberal cities, and thought I'd add a comment about Olympia. It is true that Olympia has a strong liberal streak, but the city is schizophrenic in many ways- there are at least four distinct sub-cultures in the town- the college students (very liberal) the state government (a mixed bag) and the fishing and logging cultures (very conservative). One simplistic example of this: During the Gulf War, Evergreen State students held well-attended protest rallies. Meanwhile, the local Gannett-owned newspaper's headline after one bombing raid was "Take That". The paper also got letters saying that the war protesters should be drafted. Even so, I wouldn't take it off of the liberal list. Just don't move there expecting Berkeley.
