Liberal Place: Northampton, MA

Northampton is a mecca for liberals. This is most likely due to the
presence of Smith College, a women's liberal arts college which has an
estimated 30 percent of students who are lesbian/bisexual. Northampton
is also the home of several bookstores which stock primarily materials
related to feminism and/or homosexuality. A picturesque and friendly
town, Northampton is a wonderful place to visit and live!

Northampton is also near the University of Massachusetts at Amherst,
which brings about 20,000 students to the area, and large numbers of
academics and researchers. The resulting concentration of
progressive-minded people supports bookstores, arts centers, cinemas,
cafes, and political organizations. Northampton's downtown is always
full of pedestrians people-watching, window-shopping, and meeting
acquaintances by chance.

Northampton was just given the distinction of being the #1 arts town in
America in a book on the top 100 arts towns. Music venues, gallerys,
arts and crafts, readings, dance, the Words and Pictures Museum. The
students are but occasional visitors to our town of long standing
creative artisans, writers, painters and filmmakers.
I disagree about the above 30% figure, (oft touted ever since the
National Inquirer made it up,) but the lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgendered community is visible, politically and socially active and
integrated into all facets of our socially progressive community life.
We are located in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley, with the
cooresponding waterways and hills; we are just an hour and a half from
Hartford or Boston on the edge of the Berkshires.
We are a wonderful town in a beautiful part of the country.
All are welcome to visit.
