Liberal Unfriendly Place: Marietta, GA

This city just northwest of Atlanta is in Newt Gingrich's district. Prior to that there was a Democratic congressman, but only because Larry McDonald was killed in the infamous shooting down of the KAL flight near Japan. Larry was President of the John Birch Society! Can't get more conservative than that. He never voted for any Federal appropriation that was not for defense. After his death a stretch of I-75 through Cobb County was named for him. The joke is that the Larry McDonald Memorial Highway is only the far right lane! In 1965 Cobb County voted against becoming part of the Atlanta mass transit system because they didn't want blacks to move there from Atlanta. They even created an artificial city on the north bank of the Chattahoochee river to prevent any annexation attempts by Atlanta. Marietta is till highly conservative, with several large fundamentalist churches. There were protests of the Theatre on the Square a cou[ple of years ago because a play that was done MENTIONED homosexuality. Theatre decided to forego city funds. Just north of Marietta is Kennesaw, GA (still in Cobb County), the city that passed an ordinance REQUIRING every household to own a gun. This in response to Morton Grove, IL's gun control laws. It's a redneck place for sure. Gun racks in the back of the pickups actually HAVE guns. 20 miles outside Atlanta you go back 40 years in time.

I lived in Marietta for 5 years, and I have never come across a more intolerant place in my life. The seat of power for the entire county is the Roswell Street Baptist Church, and it is the Minister who is one of the leading sources of influence in the County. How intolerant is Marietta? The Cobb County Commission, led by Commissioner Gordon Wysong, passed an ordinance stating that "the gay lifestyle" is incompatible with Cobb County community values. In the last election, Mr. Wysong was re-elected with over 60% of the vote. Marietta is the symbolic home of the Newtzi party. Stay away...far, far away.
