I would like to add Louisville, Ky to the "friendly" list because.......Mayor Jerry Abramson, who is Jewish and a Democrat, has been an extremely effective in bringing the whole community together no matter what your race, religion, orientation, etc......and a very popular mayor (2 if not 3 terms) ........gays and lesbians are quite visible and have 6-7 bars in the city (the "Connection", a huge gay bar, gets voted yearly as one of the best nightclubs in the "Best of Louisville" voting) ....... ......Bardstown Road in the Highlands is chock full of hip restaurants, coffee houses, and fun places to hang out for the more liberal types (Frankfort Avenue is fun and funky as well)......environmental groups such as "River Fields" are quite successful in ensuring that new development is eco-friendly and maintains open space.......the arts community is awesome for a city this size (Humana Festival of New American Plays, Broadway shows, opera, ballet, Shakespeare in the Park)..... .....only thing missing is the passing of an anti-discrimination ordinance for gays and lesbians ........i have faith that they will soon

The Board of Aldermen of Louisville, KY passed a limited version of the "Fairness Ordinance" on January 27, 1999 that forbids discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation in employment practices. Ironically, one of the events that provided momentum for the ordinance, which had failed in differing forms four times previously, was an event when a lesbian employee of a Baptist children's organization was outed and fired. Louisville's new Board of Aldermen are both courageous and unwilling to see the city as a liability for corporate hiring and well-being.

Unlike other cities with a similar population Louisville supports the Arts! Ask the people who leave their birthplaces to work near a city as supportive as Louisville. Yet, it is on the edge of the cultural wasteland of America and not far from the spelling intellectual Dan Quayle's home of Huntington, IN.

YIPPEE !!!!!! The Fairness Campaign was passed and signed by the mayor at last! Gays, lesbians, bi-sexuals, and transgender Louisvillians are now protected from discrimination in the workplace. Now if we can only get Jefferson County and the State of Kentucky to also do the right thing. 1999 is off to a GREAT start in Derby City.
