 Liberal Place: Ithaca, NY

 Home of Cornell University, this small town has a well-liked socialist mayor.
It also has a form of currency, the Ithaca Hour, which is accepted by many
in the town. The Hour represents one hour of work, and is meant to equalize
pay for citizens of every occupation. There is also a large
co-housing group creating a Green Village, which is building
sustainable homes with dedicated open-space/park-land and
very low impervious cover.

Touted as the "most enlightened town in America", Ithaca is an oasis for
liberals in otherwise conservative upstate New York. Ithaca is sometimes
said to be a one industry town, that being education. With Ithaca College
and Cornell University flanking the downtown area, the population of Ithaca
fluctuates with the college sessions. There is a lot of activism in
Ithaca, from gay and lesbian rights to environmental issues, and this
activism is not only from the students, but also from the year-round residents.

I live in Ithaca, NY and it is definately Liberal! There is a well- liked
openly Lesbian Rabbi in the local Temple, and several organizations
dedicated to causes which help our environment and promote diversity. The
Oldest Women's Community building in the country is located there. (Where
I am deputy director) Its a great place for Humanist Zealots like me!
