In Iowa politics, Iowa City has been described as the seat of the People's Republic of Johnson County, completely out of step with the rest of the state. This is the county that went for McGovern in the 1984 caucuses. Neither the fact that the county Democratic Party chair is gay nor the fact that the greatest vote getter on the city council is a socialist raises eyebrows. Perhaps this is all just a side effect of the University of Iowa, but some have said that Iowa City is what Ann Arbor was in the early 1960's. Add a city.
