Allright, it's another college town (Indiana University of Pennsylvania), and yes, the college is reasonably liberal (apart from a disturbing cabal of right-wing Christian organizations that seem to exert far too much power over the weak-willed administration). But heaven forbid you step off of campus, lest you be burned as a witch. It's a small town in Western/Central Pennsylvania, and there's a lot of "Family values" floating around. Regular editorials about the evils of the Humanist university that the city is forced to tolerate, things like that. And, as a personal favorite, a totalitarian police force. One incident: police are called by a dormatory floor manager who believes he smells the tang of pot. On their way, the cops see a student exiting the building. They detain (but do not arrest) him, perform a search, find rolling papers and a rolling machine (who rolls pot with a machine?) and threaten to charge him with resisting arrest, possession (no pot was found), intent to do this, conspiracy to do that. They held the kid for hours before finally releasing him, never reading him his rights. The punchline: these were campus cops, with no apprehension or arrest authority. Glorified security guards. Now sit back and imagine what the real cops are like. If you want to go to a reasonably liberal college, Indiana isn't bad. Just make sure you never, ever leave your dorm room.
