 Liberal Place: Honolulu, HIThese are comments on Honolulu, submitted by other Turn Left visitors. They do not necessarily represent the opinion of the webmaster. You may add a comment on Honolulu if you want.  Honolulu, in fact the whole state of Hawaii, is traditionally thought of
as a liberal place. Democrats have dominated most political offices
since 1954. The legislation, court decisions, strong labor unions, and
widespread concern for the environment have all contributed toward
making this one of the most liberal-friendly places in the nation.
Unfortunately, the tide seems to be shifting in favor of conservative Republicans. The local economy has been in a recession since 1991. The editorials and letters-to-the-editor constantly attack the "bloated government" and labor unions. The last governor of Hawaii started with a huge surplus and turned it into a huge deficit, giving the conservatives powerful ammunition. Honolulu is also becoming more socially conservative and less tolerant.
Honolulu may still be liberal-friendly, but is becoming increasingly
unfriendly. ...and another comment...
