 Liberal Unfriendly Place: Great Falls, MT

 This town is the worst combination of casinoes, a military base, oil
refining, and big agribusiness. Sure you can find old dives like a tiki
bar with a window into the pool, or urban cowboy inspired juke joints,
but by and large this city of about 70,000 (and falling) is a black hole
dominated by malls and outlet centers. Downtown is dead, inhalants seem
to be the drug of choice for the park dwellers, and you can't turn around
without bumping into a video keno machine. The weather is the worst in
the state, constant wind and winters i can't even talk about. This isn't
the Montana of rugged mountains and raging rivers, it's prairie-land
mixed with walmart and right-wing politicians bent on exploiting the rest
of the state for resources. Great Flaws!

Liberalism, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Great Falls is a
city that rallied to the support of an Afro-American church, which had been
defaced with graffiti. It has been a bastion of liberal politics in a state
Legislature dominated by Republicans, where liberal Democrats control the
delegation. Great Falls is probably the most racially diverse of Montana's
urban areas with the highest populations of urban Native Americans and
Blacks. People live in peace and harmony. It is a beautiful city cut-through
by the Missouri River, interrupted by a series of waterfalls. Residents
rallied recently to build, with their own work and money, a lengthy "River's
Edge" trail that showcases the waterfront. Great Falls has a history of
strong labor unionism and the social agenda the unions push. It is the state
headquarters for the progressive Farmers Union. Wheat farms gleam golden
right up to the edge of city housing. Several small mountain ranges are
visible from town, as well as the spine of the Rocky Mountain Front and Bob
Marshall. Wilderness. While the wind blows, it brings moderate temperatures
to an otherwise cold, northern place in the winter. Great Falls has often
suffered from the snobbishness of other Montana cities blessed with the pork
of government and university facilities, is an unpretentious place.
