Liberal Unfriendly Place: Florence, SC

Florence, South Carolina (County/metro region population: 100,000) is decidedly an "unfriendly" city for liberals. Despite a large professional class of professors, lawyers and doctors (the city is fast becoming a regional medical center), politics are dominated by Christian Right activists, Civil War apologists, and Right-Wing Republicans who are loathe to spend a dime on social services or education in a state that has one of the highest infant mortality rates and poverty rates in the nation, and one of the lowest average SAT scores in the nation.

I visited Florence for a week with my boyfriend. We stayed with his gay,conservative Republican friend. He has quite a few homosexual friends in the city who aren't conservatives as he is. The city has ethnic diversity,and in concluding from the local Florence Morning News,the city is making an effort to become more liberal and democratic. There are still those who think the Civil War hasn't ended and believe Evolution is nonsense,but the young are being taught to think more open-mindedly.
