Despite being surrounded by liberally-unfriendly cities like Springfield, Missouri and Tulsa, Oklahoma- Fayetteville, Arkansas, home of the University of Arkansas stands out as a fairly liberal city for this part of the country. With an active arts community, liberal free press, coffehouse scene and numerous clubs catering to hippies and frats alike, Fayetteville is a breath of fresh air amid the stench of the chicken farms dotting the nearby countryside.

Fayetteville, Arkansas city council voted to pass a human dignity resolution, Mayor Hanna, a right-wing religious zealot vetoed the resolution, the same folks over-rode his veto, but University Baptist church was called in to help the mayor sustain the veto. When that failed UBC and some other right wing religious churches has promised they will turn out the "Liberal" city council, put zealots in their place and have the christian folks vote to remove the Human dignity resoultion, Fayetteville might be off your list real soon if the zealots gain control of the city council..

Fayetteville will remain a liberal and progressive community thanks to the U. of A. and the quality of people drawn to our lifestyle here. That's not to say we may ever have a progressive Mayor because the power structure is so entrenched. There seems to have always been an identity crisis between our town and its government.

Don't kid yourselves. Fayetteville only looks progressive because of its proximity to the knuckle-scuffers in Tulsa, OK and Benton County, AR. The local Democratic Party organization failed to lift a finger in support of the human dignity resolution; heck, they barely lifted a finger to help Sen. Blanche Lincoln defeat a truly scary Christian Wrong opponent. Why? Too many of them were eager to stay in the good social graces of the UBC/Immanuel Baptist/Wal-Mart exec set. Those gays were just too tacky and gauche for demanding basic civil liberties, I guess.
