Liberal Unfriendly Place: Erie, PA

Erie is an unfriendly Liberal city. Despite having a large Democratic
voting majority it is very socially conservative. If you are a minority
you are persona non grata in Erie. Race relations are horrible, the city
is very segragated, and according to the Children's Defense Fund, Erie
has the highest percentage of black and Hispanic children living in
poverty of any city in America! The talk show hosts continually spread
lies about gays and lesbians, and two years ago during the bicentennial
parade, the gay and lesbian float could not advertise itself. The float
ended up being destroyed a couple of days beforehand and a make-shift
float was built that had to have police protection. Despite being the
third largest city in PA, this overwhelmingly Catholic city does not
allow legal abortions to be performed. The Erie paper did not allow, up
until a month ago, any same-sex personal ads and when it did allow it it
caused a mild upoar.

Having moved from San Francisco CA in 1998 to the shores of Erie PA. I
can verify the old world mentality that is the driving force behind
"Americas Finest City". I owned a chain of Alternatve Lifestyle Stores
in the Bay area. They were called GAY Marts. It was a smashing success
in CA but bombed in Erie. Our store on State street was continually
vandalized and my life partner Todd feared for his life every time we
went dancing. To sum it up if you are Gay avoid Erie Pa

I happen to live in the Erie, PA area, and I think the characterization as
"liberal unfriendly" is rather unfounded. Admittedly, Erie isn't a liberal
place (neither is much of Pennsylvania, for that matter), but some of the
problems the last reviewer mentioned (especially the poverty amongst black
and hispanic children) stems from the fact that the area is doing poor
economically (factory jobs have been leaving Erie rapidly over the last few
years).
Otherwise I'd say Erie is rather ambivalent to liberal/conservative issues.

I left Erie 18 years ago to work in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. I travel throughout western PA and eastern Ohio and truthfully the entire area is similar. People can be judgemental. People are proud of their heritage. The majority are blue collar workers. Their world is their town and community. No, new age business do not grow here. Business leave. People move to warmer areas and college graduates do not stay. Pennsylvania has a very high rate of senior citizens. It is up to the people who remain to vote for representation, growth, better schools and equality. I will not give up on this area. I am proud to have been born and raised in Erie. We need to move forward.

Erie-the most boring city in America. I have lived in Erie my entire life and
plan on leaving here to go to college in Boston. Practically every teen and
young adult I have ever encountered aspires to leave this place as soon as
humanly possible. The police here are facsists, I think the EPD is run by
nazis and members of the KKK. They have nothing better to do than harrass
young kids on the street. I have written articles about the lack of
recreational centers for teens in the area and I was basically written off as
a whiny kid that isn't creative enough to find something to do on my own. I
could go on for hours and hours about the faults of this little rat hole, but
I don't have the time or energy.

I don't think Erie is so "conservative" as an outsider might think. We
did elect a lesbian Mayor. Erie does have some serious falts, mind you,
but overall it is a pretty good place to live. I've lived here most of
my life (a brief hiatus to be in the military), and I happen to feel
that Erie is going through generational problems. There are a lot of
stupid people who live here. Consequently, innocent people, who
through no fault of their own, wind up getting hurt. All of my friends
are liberals, and my girlfriend went to a local strip club to protest in
its FAVOR. For the person who thinks the EPD is a bunch of Nazi's, I
have only to say this: Ever been to Millcreek or Fairview?? If so you
know the statment you published is not true...
