Liberal Place: El Paso, TX

No doubt about it: El Paso is a blue-collar, Hispanic, and liberal city. The place always, but always, votes Democrat. It could really serve as a strong liberal stronghold in the southwest (which are certainly few and far enough between). Unfortunately, it must also be the most apathetic town in the U.S. Voter turnout rarely exceeds 25% even in presidential elections. The El Paso Times may be a semi-liberal paper (if liberal means supportive of Clinton's policies) but it is ineptly run. Local coverage is poor and superficial; national and international coverage is almost non-existent. And you should see the yahoos that've been elected to the city council. And the way those southwestern-style crisply-landscaped suburban-hellish stucco type neighborhoods - many of them gated - are popping up is a little bit ominous. Still and all, it's a surprisingly tolerant place.

...and another comment...

The El Paso Times is a right wing rag. It prints only artcles that are pro-military since Ft. Bliss is a major boost for El Paso's economy. El Paso is mainly hispanic, yet as fellow hispanics in Chiapas are being killed by the American trained and armed Mexican army, the Times supports these actions.
