years now, Durham is one of the few cities in North Carolina that has
such a progressive (yes, progressive...) agenda for its schools,
environment, and local economy. In addition, Durham has some of the most
liberal members of the NC House and Senate, and has helped elect the
first Black US House member since Reconstruction, and turned out a
Gingrich Republican Freshman in 1996.
Durham is the headquarters for the NC branch of NARAL, and was one of
the key Gantt for Senate strongholds in both 1990 and 1996.
