Liberal Place: Duluth, MN

I believe Duluth, MN is very liberal-friendly. It has twice in the last year kept the gay-basher Rev. Fred Phelps from rallying there. Different organizations are very active in Social Justice issues. Also the majority of the population truly cares for the beatiful enviornment in Duluth on the shores of Lake Superior.

...and another comment...

I'm more familiar with Cloquet, a suburb of Duluth. Cloquet had a GREAT Labor Day Parade. In this town of <15000, there were 4 Gubenetorial Candidates in the parade. (Freeman, Humphrey, Coleman, Johnson)!! The pro-union candidates were greeted enthusiatically; the anti-union candidates, politely, at best. The fireworks display was even more impressive.

The Duluth area is solid Union ground. There is a lot of social conservatism; on the other hand, the Lutheran Pastors I know in the area are some of the most dedicated 'lefties' I've ever encountered -- these are the people who you read about who go to jail to protest the School of the Americas. There is latent anti- ( homosexual, atheist, black) prejudice, but the prejudice is not deep; the hatred is directed against vague cotton-candy abstractions rather than any individual. The only violence that is tolerated is violence against Bambi, and then only during legally delineated hunting seasons.

In short, together with Madison, WI and Mpls, MN, Duluth, MN is a good destination for lefties. There will be challenges; but this is the district which, to the state leg, elected Wilbur Munger for the past 50+ years. This is a district in which I, and any American lefty, can be proud to vote.
