Although a most bitter labor dispute is ongoing with the Detroit Newspapers and media giants Gannett and Knight Ridder (PLEASE BOYCOTT BOTH OF THESE EVIL CORPORATIONS! THIS INCLUDES USA TODAY) Detroit has much to offer, a revitalized labor movement, Wayne State University with it's labor school. The Walter Reuther Library, the Detroit Institute of Arts, with awesome Diego Rivere murals, Detroit has much to offer.

...and another comment...

Downtown Detroit and other nearby areas contain many a pocket of liberalism. But, other than those three centers of left- dominated feelings, there is a growing trend of conservatism. Perhaps this is just the natural output of suburban life. Its important to remember, though, that the vast majority of liberalism in these parts is populist, rather than progressive. This being, obviously, because as the Motor City, Detroit is also the home to many, MANY, UAW and other union card-carriers. Sooo... in sumnation.. Detroit's great if your brand of liberalism is populist, Not so much if you're a striking newspaper employee, but, outside of Downtown, Ann Arbor, or Royal Oak, you won't find much in the way of progressive sentiment.
