A city that welcomed Bill Horn (promoter of the popular video "the Gay Agenda") to start a chapter of Concerned Parents of Des Moines in order to oust an openly gay, 10-year school board member, Jonathon Wilson. Also home to a cable access television show which features locals who regularly discuss how to kill, torture or maim abortion providers.

While I agree that Des Moines has some ugly right-wing lumps on it, I must also point out that it is a solidly Democratic city (but not the 'burbs), and has elected and re-elected Ed Fallon, by far the most progressive state legislator in Iowa.

While Des Moines does have some extremely conservative groups, in general it tends to vote Liberal. And the Des Moines Register is one of the most openly Liberal newspapers in the nation. It's a great read.

Ed Fallon is the best thing that's happened here in a long time. We need more like him.

There is an established core group of leftist activists, organizations (Iowans Against the Death Penalty), and some great non-profits who have survived despite the evil Governor for life Terry Branstad.

On the home front, Borders Books And Music continues dragging its feet to negotiate a fair contract for its unionized employees The union was voted in almost a year ago despite Borders strong armed (and expensive) tactics to crush it.

Isn't one of the countries most popular and successful progressive newspapers,"The Nation", published in Des Moines? And what about all of the gay bars and freaks that come out at night? Granted, West Des Moines is typical of expanding suburbs; mindless, massive consumption with no regard for rural life or environmental problems and there are certainly a fair amount of religious fanatics, but much of the actual city remains democratic. Des Moines isn't lost yet, so don't give up!
