Liberal Place: Davis, CA

Davis is one of the most Liberal-friendly cities in the United States, and it is home of one of the best-known University of California campuses. Davis has long been known as a nuclear-free zone. Because of the liberal predilections of this city, conservatives call it "The Peoples' Republic of Davis", but this kind of name-calling has no effect on both the residents and the student body, who profess a very fond admiration for President Bill Clinton. Davis is currently represented by an extremely honest gentleman, Congressman Vic Fazio, although his voting record in Congress isn't as liberal as the Davis populace wants it to be. Davis, CA has always been, and will continue to be, a strong Democratic bastion. It is no wonder why Davis is a very hospitable place, especially for Liberals.

Davis may be liberal, but it is far from friendly. The sheer level of snobbery is a sight to behold.

Davis thinks it's a liberal city, but that really only goes so far. The University of California campus dominates the area so much that about half of the town's residents are undergrad college students who rent apartments for part of the year, then go "home." As such, many have no commitment to the community, and make few efforts to improve things.

That leaves the rest of the residents to elect a city council that spends most of its activist time on trivial actions, instead of making substantive progressive changes. The "nuclear-free zone" idea is great--but I'd like to see it carried out! There are radioactive labs on campus, along with some weird nuclear waste (frozen radioactive beagles...). Also, when the DoD trains carrying spent fuel rods from overseas came through town in August 1998, that would have been the perfect time to insist on being nuclear-free. Instead, the Davis fire dept. "fully cooperated" with the feds.

Aside from the university, it's a basic middle-class suburb--mostly white, though, and with no low-income housing. Not very diverse, to say the least.
