Liberal Unfriendly Place: Columbia, SC

It's the capital of a state that still flies the confederate flag over the Statehouse, where people chant "burn, Baby burn" as they go past the correctional facility where the archaic death penalty is still in use. A free Indigo Girls concert at an area high school was cancelled by the principal because the women in the group are gay.

 Its neither fish nor fowl. But, donıt blame the City of Columbia for actions of the suburbs and South Carolinaıs leglisature.

 The Mayor has pushed to get ³The Rebel Flag² off the State House. The cancelled Indigo Girls concert was planned for Irmo High School and actually held in Columbia. Where those people who drove by the execution site came from is anybodyıs guess. But, donıt forget that Lexington County (one of the most Republican areas of the U.S.) is right across the river.

 This city is really a businessperson and lawyerıs place. Those people are always careful to not be anti anything. At the same time, they are never very pro anything.

 It could be changed. There are plenty of people here who should be liberally/progressively active. They are not. University of South Carolina students and faculty are one of the big missing ingredients.

 What should we do? Like Joe Hill said, ³Organize!²
