Liberal Place: Cleveland, OH

Cleveland is a liberal friendly city in the US. Cleveland has long been a haven for many liberals from surrounding conservative Ohio. The State of Ohio is generally worthless with the exception of Columbus and Cleveland.......two liberal forts in Ohio. Cleveland has its world famous Symphony Orchastra, and its long standing appreciation for the arts. It also boasts a large environmentalist movement which is trying to curb suburban sprawl, and has the most building in a metropolitan city of luxurious housing downtown. From the flats to its cultural awareness, Cleveland is more liberal then not. Cleveland also has a large liberal gay community in the adjacent community of Lakewood, and along the beautiful lake homes.

I don't know what the person means by Columbus being liberal, but they are insane. Outside of some tolerance around Ohio State University, the city is a poster child for corporate America. Even the school districts of the city are officially split to prevent any integration. Name another city in Ohio which is divided into two seperate and distinct districts. All the council members are elected at-large to prevent significant minority and left-wing input.

As for Cleveland, while it has a more leftist tradition, we must always keep in mind that it is a populist city. Leftist on economic issues, conservative on other issues.

Cleveland is a liberal city in most respects. Although the political structure, with the economic aspects generally following, TENDS to be more conservative, the social and cultural trends are liberal. As noted, Cleveland has long been a patron of the arts, the symphony, ballet, art and history museums, theatres, and a musical haven (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), (just check out the clubs in the Flats!). Cleveland also offers a cultural and ethnic diversity found hardly elsewhere in the midwest. While the economic trends are due to the politicians, let's not forget that it is up to the voters to see that the right people get put into place.

Also, I wouldn't say that the rest of Ohio is a wasteland. I'm not sure what I'd call it but a wasteland seems a bit too harsh.
