Liberal Place: Charlottesville, VA

Another liberal college town with a pretty good University Deomcrats organization. Not everyone in Virginia votes for Ollie North. Th University is pretty diverse, tolerant, and open to different lifestyles. A liberal, while it's not perfect, will feel fairly comfortable here.

It's not just the University that's liberal the whole town is a little like that. When I frist went to Charlottesville I couldn't believe it was Virginia. I think in some cases the people who live there are more on the left then the students. It is a nice little safe haven for lefties in VA.

I would have to disagree with this commmentary. For the most part, Charlottesville is one of the most conservative towns in the Virginia area.

Western Virginia tends to be very, VERY conservative. A mere hour and a half to the south you have Lynchburg, the home of Jerry Fawell and the Conservative Right. Despite its college atmosphere, the more popular organizations on campus tend to be the College Republicans, not the University Democrats. The liberals at UVa dont have a solid organization, and the whole college liberal community continually loses ground.

As for the non-college setting, the actual people of Charlottesville tend to be more free-spirited. This, however, is a far cry from being friendly to liberals. Tolerance exists, but it should not equate to a handshake and a smile to everyone from the left. The hippie in the crystal store seems to be a typical 60's LBJ lover, but nine times out of ten will tell you what great things Reagan did for the country.

My overall view.....C-ville and UVa tend to be to the right. The khaki-clad fraternity boy image tends to roll over to the town. Though there are liberals here, they suffer from not being organized and not getting their voice REALLY heard. Organizations like NOW, the NAACP, and other minority groups are more often ridiculed than praised, especially by the press.

C-ville isnt a liberal's worst nightmare, but at best its apathetic to new ideas and liberalism.

A UVa student.
