 When the Ku Klux Klan wanted to hold a demonstration there, nearly
the entire population of the city protested and hung anti-discrimination
banners in their windows.

Butte is a Gibraltrar of Unionism, We had a Socialist mayor in the '20's
until the company set him up and the electorate turned on him. The IWW
was active here and still has a few local activists. People are
fighting the past "copper collar" of a one industry town and there is
now a major superfund cleanup going on with development of the "greening
" of Butte.

Butte has elected one Repbublican legislator in the laat 49 (yes 49) years
and he will be exposed for the swine he is in the 1998 election. Butte is
an excellent example of the impacts Unions have had on progressive
organizing. Butte also gave America Pat Williams, one of the greatest
Representatives, and former Sen. Majority Leader Mike Mansfield who is
still a guiding light for many people, an example of the type of person we
all wish we were.
