Liberal Unfriendly Place: Bowling Green, OH

I lived for a year in Bowling Green, Ohio, which is 20 miles south of Toledo and about the same distance north of Findlay (which appears on the liberal-unfriendly list). I found it not only ironic but disturbing that this "college" town (which houses a rather good university, which I attended before transferring) is better described as an "anti-college" community.

The locals openly dislike students, few of whom hail from Bowling Green and few of whom bother staying after graduation. Also, with the exception of two small cafes, practically no businesses appeal to the college community. The town lacks a quality bookstore; the largest such store in town is avowedly Christian and thoroughly sterile.

In addition, the locals show open hostility to students of color, occasionally refusing to serve them or rent them apartments. In June 1994, the local Ku Klux Klan staged a small rally on the Wood County courthouse steps, and the mayor and city council made absolutely no effort to prevent it, claiming that it was their right and that any protesters who showed up were the "troublemakers."

This is, in short, a town where open-mindedness, liberal thought, and even mild activism are soundly discouraged.
