One of the friendliest and most accepting places in the entire world! Breathtaking beauty! A libertine atmosphere!

Unfortunately it can be expensive. But many live there happily, well below the poverty level, and there are ways to do Big Sur very inexpensively. Many of the inhabitants tend to keep to themselves somewhat, savoring their private worlds, but they tend to be friendly, understanding, and helpful about the need to economize.

There are inexpensive places to stay. I slept in my Jeep many-a-night; a local highway patrolman agreed not to evict me, though it is against the law, so I'm told.

The town of Big Sur is small and friendly, but it is the region there-around which is spectacular!

Pfeiffer Beach, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Ventana, The Post Ranch Inn (!), Napenthe, the monastary, Dijeens, and the many galleries and redwood forests lure me back time after time!

But best of all is Esalen! The Esalen Institute! A place of incredible natural, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual beauty. A wonderful place to heal, to recover, to be in love, to make friends, for self discovery. My friends there will always be in my heart.

Imagine: Lying naked on a massage table, on the edge of the cliff, in a warm December sun, as a wonderful woman from Louisiana spreads oil over you. Music is playing. Birds singing. There are flowers everywhere. You hear waves crashing on the rocks below. Smell the salt air. The pacific is a gigantic sapphire. And you can see forever... ...I know. It happened to me time after time in one version or another.

And I remember leaving Big Sur, reluctantly, just before dawn, driving slowly up Highway-1, the fog drifting across the highway and through the evergreen trees, blowing in the cold, morning wind...
