Yes, in Mississippi there exists a small town which is the cultural mecca of the Gulf Coast (don't let those gay-bashers in Ocean Springs fool you). Main Street in Bay St. Louis contains wonderful art galleries, bookstores, at least one voodoo shop (not of the tourist variety) and fine little low-priced eateries. I had the pleasure of living there until just a few months ago, and hurry back whenever I can. The Blue Dish Coffee House on Second Street has an ad-hoc collection of patron's blues CDs playing, many of them mine!

A few days in this town will show you a sizeable per-capita gay population woven into the fabric of the community, as well as producing artists and writers (the Bay is the home of historian/writer Stephen Ambrose and jazz legend Pete Fountain). The quite ambitious local theater has presented very good productions of "L'Cage" and "Marat/Sade".

But remember, it is in Mississippi, so once you're into the next town it's back to "normal"!

...and another comment...

Having been to Bay St. Louis, it is quite a charming little place. However, I don't think it's quite as progressive as Biloxi. I will say that a really nice place to eat is Trapani's on Beach Boulevard. Great seafood and affordable.
