 Liberal Place: Baltimore, MDThese are comments on Baltimore, submitted by other Turn Left visitors. They do not necessarily represent the opinion of the webmaster. You may add a comment on Baltimore if you want.  In the fifties, Baltimore was infamous for racial tensions and
backwards thinking. But when the economy collapsed here several decades
ago, most of the affluent whites fled to the suburbs and the
Baltimore/DC sprawl. This left a population consisting mostly of the
poor and minorities to begin the monumental task of rebuilding the city.
After years of work, while much of the city is still decrepit, those
still living here are slowly building a liberal utopia. It is impossible to be elected in Baltimore as a Republican. Each year the democratic primary is taken for granted as the election for local offices.
Baltimore is majority afro-american, has a large and open gay
population, and plays home to many other groups. Its long time mayor,
afro-american Kurt Schmoke, is one of the most liberal mayors of large
cities in the nation. Baltimore has also given rise to liberal
musicians, such as Tori Amos and Disappear Fear. Finally, if director
John Waters can't bring himself to leave, what liberal can resist Charm
City?
