Liberal Unfriendly Place: Augusta, GA

Augusta Georgia is one of the most liberal unfriendly places I've lived in. The economy is composed of the Medical College of Georgia, the Savannah River Site (where nuclear bombs' plutonium recently came from), Fort Gordon (a huge military base), and Petrochemical Companies (in a toxic stretch of the Savannah River called the 'Miracle Mile'). The newspaper (among other things) is owned by Mr. Morris, the tobacco company dude, and The Masters golf tournement welcomes everyone with expensive white balls. Two years ago, a company was exposed as having dumped cancer causing creosote (what telephone poles are soaked in) onto an elementary school playground for years! The Savannah River Nuclear Site was chosen in the 1950's because mainly poor blacks lived there and could easily have their entire town dislocated (The "reoriented" town is called *New* Ellentown). The citizens ousted one Republican rep because he voted for the assault weapons ban. There is also speculation that the crusade to redraw congressional districts before the 1996 election, especially Cynthia McKinney's, a black woman whose district snaked from Atlanta through Kaolin Country (white clay used in industry, markets for 2000/lb, black farmers paid 10/lb for extraction rights with illegal contracts)through Augusta and down into Savannah, was funded in large part by Augusta's *Old Money* (read: cotton merchants, textile factory owners, doctors). You may remember Kenny Loggins' lyric "Augusta Georgia is just no place to be". I agree.

While I agree with the sentiments expressed regarding Augusta, I would like to point out a couple of factual errors. First, William S. Morris III, while being a very rich and conservative man, is not (to my knowledge) a "tobacco company dude." He's a lifelong Augustan who owns a lot of newspapers, but I'm not aware of connections with Phillip Morris or other tobacco companies. Second, Kenny Loggins isn't responsible for the lyric "Augusta Georgia is just no place to be." I'm not sure about the actual author, but I'm inclined to say Pure Prairie League.

Having lived across the river in Aiken, SC, I agree completely with the original author's statements. It seems as if the average IQ there must be 40. They all smoke and the citizens look like they came from the movie "Deliverance". Plus they're all a bunch of right wing Christians too!

I live across the river in Aiken County, which is no different than Augusta. (There are still people who don't have indoor plumbing here!) The Augusta-Aiken area is infested with self-righteous, hypocritical Bible-thumpers, bigots of every shape and form, and uneducated xenophobes. The air is brownish yellow and filled with stench from the chemical plants and pulp mills, which also crapped up the Savannah River with mercury and other heavy metals. And, it's sickeningly hot and humid most of the year. I don't think I have to worry about going to Hell. I already am there! By the way, it was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band that said, "Augusta, Georgia is just no place to be."

Have you ever been around a group of people that seemed so lost that as the conversation progressed you almost wished someone would just put a bullet in your head to end the misery? I've lived in Augusta for 2 1/2 years and I experience that feeling at least once a day.

I live in a very small community south of Augusta, and it is hard to battle the conservatism and limited views I am presented with daily. Although the Augusta area has always been my home, and I don't hate it. I agree that most people here do not share my liberal views. Most people here (my family included) pick quarrels with me because I do not have conservative views, fight unfairly, and change the subject when I make a good and valid point. So I agree that Augusta, GA is unfriendly to liberals. Since I am here for the long haul, though, I figure my role is to kindly and quietly talk sense into all that I can as well as to disagree with poeple out loud when they say something ignorant (in a nice way of course) so that the peoson feels like the jerk that they are.
