Liberal Place: Athens, OHThese are comments on Athens, submitted by other Turn Left visitors. They do not necessarily represent the opinion of the webmaster. You may add a comment on Athens if you want. I think you should add Athens, Ohio to the list. Athens is a
college town (Ohio University) of about 25 or 30 thousand people. I am a
twenty-three year old resident who works for a non-profit organization
called Rural Action that does grassroots community organizing in Ohio's
Appalachian region.Among my reasons for suggesting Athens as a classically liberal community: rumoredly it has the largest per capita population of former Peace Corps volunteers in the US. I work for the largest VISTA run rural based organization in the country. We (myself included) have 31 VISTA volunteers on staff. Maya Lin, designer of the Vietnam War Memorial, is an Athenean. The Ohio Hempery, one of the world's largest mail order hemp based companies is situated and "home grown" in Athens County. Athens also has one of the most densly packed bar districts in the country. 23 of them for 25 thousand people! We were also the first city in Ohio to launch a curb side recycling program. This program is now the model that the rest of the state uses. There is also no less then six intentional communites (read: commune) on the periphery of A-Town. And it is beautiful. The summers are hot, the winters are cold and the fallis the best.
