Ann Arbor, Michigan is a liberal-friendly place. It has many rather unusual laws such as a city domestic partnership ordinance (and the University of Michigan recognizes it for health insurance purposes) and only a $5.00 fine for smoking marijuana in public. It sports an annual "Hash Bash" where people come from miles around to do just that (and on the university campus, no less), and is known far and wide as "24.6 square miles, surrounded by reality".

Ann Arbor pretends to be liberal, but has been taken over by big money. The housing market alone prices out anybody making less than $250,000/year unless you're a grey hippie who bought in before the 80's. A recent conservative sweep in city council has begun to turn back the tide of liberalism as an influx of hitech execs move their kids into the school system and their mansions onto farmland. The old hippies are dying out and the young folks are moving to Seattle. Another 10 years and Ann Arbor will look like any other walled-off suburban republican bastion of xenophobia, homophobia, and racism in Amerika.

Ann Arbor, Michigan is a liberal city. The motivation of many to live within the city limits has pushed real estate prices high and changed the political mix of the city. Ann Arbor is not a safe haven for those seeking a homogeneous politcal environment--it engages in the most healthy public political discourse since Plato's Republic. The fundemental principles of liberty and free speech among all citizens makes it impossible for Ann Arbor to ever be accused of conservatism. The most 'liberial' of cities are also sometimes the most closed cities. Only in Ann Arbor, can two wealthy, hi-tech business men walk down the street holding hands. You don't have to be poor to be liberal. When visiting Ann Arbor, open your mind-you may learn something about yourself.
