Alexandria, Minnesota is where I grew up. The day I left was the greatest day of my life. After living in that backwards town for 10 years, leaving was like a dream come true. Why is the town so backed up?

Power and Money...first off, to succeed in anything in Alex, you have to have the right last name...if you're father isn't a successful doctor or real estate agent, forget about making the team. And money is everything in that town...if you don't have money, you don't have power.

But mostly, Alex is very anti-arts and very pro-sports. The majority of citizens in Alex are Redneck Milita types so they think anything artsy will turn their tough boys into sensitive pansies. The Theatre at my High School (Jefferson) got hardly ANY funds at all while the district paid thousands upon thousands of dollars on the football team and other sports...new uniforms, new gym floor, new stadium lights ($70,000) and the list goes on. But when the drama club asked for the school to take care of the rodent infestation in the drama room, they said no. And did not do a thing about it until the rodents moved into the cafeteria. Then it was important.

The town is very right-wing christian. I don't there are any Jewish people there, or anyone else of any other religion. So you can imagine what the people are like. They just plain suck and are the most close-minded fools I've ever known. I'm glad I don't have to deal with them anymore.

...and another comment...

Alexandria, VA, should be added to the liberal friendly list. It is, first of all, a Democratic stronghold -- Don Beyer won handily in the recent gubernatorial race, it funds its own public transportation system, it is racially and ethnically diverse, and it has a strong sense of history. There is a thriving art community and it even has a theatre. I believe -- but am not certain -- that there is a small gay community.
