A message to our opponents...
This is a note to the opponents of equal rights. I wrote this because I wanted a nice quick little essay that summarized a lot of my feelings about where America is headed. I think it is very strong and hopeful...unless you are a member of the Radical Right!
You can't fight the tide of history. Gays and lesbians are going to continue to gain broader and broader acceptance in American society. The seasons will continue their inevitable cycle, and as they do, more and more of us will come out of the closet and stake our positions in American society. We will raise children, worship, work, pay taxes, vote, serve in the military, and yes, get married. For unlike you, our "family values" are no oyxmoron.
As the years go on, and those who are young now move into the leadership roles of American society, the legal and political barriers will start to fall faster and faster. The petty dime store legislation that you are passing today to take away our rights will be quickly swept away. Your backlash will be more and more insignificant as the years go on. Your screaming will continue to get more shrill. You already know this. The writing is on the wall; on the TV tube, the silver screen, the computer monitor, the daily newspaper.
We are everywhere. Every person that comes out of the closet is another defeat for you. And once we are out, you will never, in a million years or with whatever power you can bear, force us back in!
Love will triumph over hate. The freedom to love is the freedom that makes America great.
Deal with it.
