Since we live in a democracy, the best way for gays and lesbians to make their voices heard is to vote. The people listed on this page have gone one step further, by running for and winning elected office. There are over 100 openly gay people serving in elected office throughout America, in offices ranging from city halls to the halls of Congress. I only have a fraction of these officeholders listed below. Please let me know of additions to this list, especially for local offices. Barney Frank ...Massachusetts 4th District
Barney Frank has been a tireless champion of gay and lesbian equal rights. A dignified and statemanlike presence on the floor of the House of Representatives, he is now that body's leading proponent of gay rights with the 1996 retirement of colleagues Steve Gunderson (R-WI) and Gary Studds (D-MA).
Jim Kolbe ...Arizona 5th District
Jim Kolbe is living proof that one can hold conservative positions on most issues and still be gay. After coming out in 1996, he was re-elected overwhelmingly by Arizona voters and is the only openly gay Republican serving in Congress today.
