Anti-Gay Companies Every time you buy a product or a service, you are contributing to a company's bottom line. Buying from companies which support bigotry and hatred towards gays is the same as making a contribution to the Christian Coalition...so be careful where you spend your money! This is a list of companies which have acted in a manner intended to hurt gays and lesbians. Please do not support bigotry by purchasing products or services from these companies, tell other to do the same, and if you are so inclined, write to the company to tell them why they have lost your business. Please note that this list is for companies who have made decisions "at the top" that hurt the gay community. It is always possible that you will run into a bigot working a cash register somewhere, and such cases should not be seen as a sign that a whole company is anti-gay. Also, please be ware that the information for each of these companies was collected from a variety of anecdotal sources and is being posted here as a public service and represents the opinions of many people. Actively Anti-Gay These companies actively promote bigotry towards gays, either in their internal policies, or publically by giving money to hate groups or promoting bigotry in other ways. Boycott these companies and encourage others to do the same. Oppose their expansion if they come to your town. In short, these are the real bad guys. JC Penney: Chain of department stores. Pulled ads from all future episodes of "Ellen" deemed "controversial." You can tell them what you think about that decision here. Wendys: Fast food restaurant chain owned by Dave Thomas. Pulled ads from all future episodes of "Ellen." Additionally, a reader commented, "Just to let you know, ol' Mr. Thomas has been on Pat Robertson's propaganda show a number of times, mainly to speak on his adoption and support of it. He had also publicly stated his admiration of Pat and his agenda..." However, someone else pointed out the Wendy's supposedly has an anti-discrimination policy covering gays. Chrysler: Automobile manufacturer. Also owns Thrifty and Dollar Rent-a-Car. Pulled ads from all future episodes of "Ellen" citing "controversy" as a reason. General Motors: Automobile manufacturer. Pulled ads from all future episodes of "Ellen." Johnson and Johnson: Maker of wide variety of health and hygiene related products. Pulled ads from all future episodes of "Ellen." Golden State Container: An Arizona company, fired an employee for the only reason that he was a homosexual. The employee sued and the case went to the AZ Supreme Court. In Blaine v. Golden State Container, the decision was in the Company's favor. The court decided there were neither State nor Federal protections from firing someone for being gay. Possibly Anti-Gay These companies the jury's still out on. Cracker Barrel Corporation: (no online presence) Cracker Barrel is a chain of "down home" style restaurants found usually along Interstates throught the country, especially int he midwest region and south. Rabidly anti-gay, will fire any employees known to be gay on the spot regardless of job performance. However, there are conflicting reports about Cracker Barrel. Someone else wrote "I believe your information about Cracker Barrel is outdated. I have discussed these issues with a District Manager and there is absolutely no ruling that says anything about gays being dismissed. They have a strong policy about dating among employees and they will dismiss someone, but that occurs with heterosexual issues as well." Another Cracker Barrelian (is that a word?) added: "I have been employed by Cracker Barrel in the capacity of Associate Manager, and now General Manager for 3 1/2 years. I can assure you that at no time has it ever been corporate, store, or personal policy of anyone I've come in contact with to discriminate against gay, or bi-sexual persons. Nor speaking for myself have there ever been any issues discussed in training, or in any indirect manner. I have nothing to gain or lose by sharing this with you other than the truth. Take it or leave it ther it is!" So the jury is still out on Cracker Barrel. Anyone with further information, please let me know.
